King’s College London – Simulstrat

Simulstrat is a spin out from King’s College London (KCL). KCL has nine schools of study including Medicine, Biomedical and Health Sciences, and Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College Health Trust includes Guy’s & St Thomas’s. The Defence Studies Department provides education and training at the Joint Services Command and Staff College.

Prof. David Slavin, Medical Expert
Occupational Physician and Visiting Professor at Imperial College London.
David is a member of a Royal Society steering committee and an advisor to the UK Government on science and technology. He has most recently been the executive director of the Business Innovation Unit, Pfizer Global Research and Development and before that he was head of Risk Technology, a risk research unit within R&D. He is an ex-Royal Navy Medical Officer and had been the Deputy Chairman of the UK military nuclear regulator of the naval nuclear power programme and aspects of nuclear weapon safety. He is a on the Board of Simulstrat and is a consultant who provides niche science, business and human factors solutions.


Air Vice Marshal Steve Chisnall, COO & Project Director
Steve Chisnall had 28 years service in the Royal Air Force, including tours in the Ministry of Defence, the UK Cabinet Office and on operations overseas. He studied for an M Phil in International Relations at St John’s College Cambridge, writing his thesis on crisis management. He has wide international experience with particular expertise in strategic planning, war gaming and the development of career officers. His most recent appointment was as the Deputy Commandant at the Royal College of Defence Studies in London, running a one year course on strategic security studies.


Dr Susie Holdsworth, Science Design
Susie Holdsworh has a first degree in Biochemistry from Bristol University and a PhD in Clinical Biochemistry from Department of Medicine of Birmingham University. She has a strong background in scientific research and considerable experience of the healthcare, pharmaceutical and biotechnology market sector, both in new product development and analysis of healthcare product concepts for investment potential. Prior to joining Simulstrat, Susie worked at Celltech and Apax Partners. Her experience extends in a number of varying sectors: academia, business, education and voluntary.


Dr Andrew Guise, Business Design, Avige
Avige is advising on the industrial and fiscal aspects of the simulation. Avige is a specialist consultancy focused on the lifescience, chemcials and the renewable energy industries. In addition to providing critical management support services, Avige advises on strategy, business plan formulation, business development/licensing, fund raising, and mergers and acquisitions. The company’s sector expertise includes primary care/hospitals, hospital supply, medical technology, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, specialty chemicals, biofuels, wind and solar power.

Andrew, has a BEng in Chemical Engineering and a PhD in Biochemical Engineering. For 15 years he has acted as advisor, investor, Board member and executive director for a number of life-science and “green” energy companies.

He spent 7 years with UBS and Deutsche Bank as a corporate financier, and 7 years in senior management roles for Chienna B.V, De Novo Pharmaceuticals Ltd, and Thrombogenics N.V. Prior to working with Avige, Andrew acted as the UK representative of East Hill management, a Boston based VC focusing on University spin-outs managing circa £100 million.
During that time Andrew has been involved in raising over $2 billion of capital including the floatations of GenMab, Isotis, and Thrombogenics and he has represented advisors to/investors in companies involved in the following sales/exits; Plasso to Becton Dickenson, Surface Therapeutics to Serentis, Domantis to GSK; Chienna to Octoplus; Maquet to Getinge, Degussa Dental to Dentsply, Astra Zeneca’s oral anaesthetics to Dentsply, St Martins to HCA, Inspec to Laporte and Pronova to FMC.


Dr Sara Ulrich, Simulation Director
Sara is the Simulation Director of Simulstrat in charge of simulation design, building and playing.

Previously she was a Lecturer on International Crisis Management & Negotiation, European Defence studies and Alliance IR theory at Paris University XI, as well as being the Secretary General of the research centre for Analysis of Disputes & their Modes of Settlement (CADMOS).
She received her French LL.B. and LL.M. in European and Public Law from Strasbourg University, her German LL.M (Hons) at Passau University, her M.Phil (Hons) in Diplomacy and Strategic Negotiations and her PhD (Hons) in international relations from Paris University XI.
Sara’s research activities include EU-NATO crisis management, alliances and coalition building in security negotiations, civilian crisis management, and the political impact of international disaster relief.

She foremost specialized in building and conducting diplomatic and crisis management simulations for students, professionals, military personnel and diplomats from all around the globe. Ulrich received a scholar-in-residence award from the European Union Centre at Texas A&M University for her research on hurricane Katrina’s impact on transatlantic relations, as well as an award to be a visiting scholar at Harvard University’s Program on Negotiation to research crisis management & environment simulation design. Her 2006-2007 Katrina Conference Tour attracted an important interest on both sides of the Atlantic, most recently from the French Minister of Defence & the UK House of Parliament.
